SCRIPTURE
1 Samuel 17:1-50 Old Testament
The Israelites and the Philistines were staunch enemies throughout ancient history. This story is just one of these occasions that they fought on the battlefield.
Both sides were ready to battle. One army was on one hillside, the other army facing them on the opposite hillside. The Philistines had one champion fighter, a ten foot tall soldier named Goliath. Goliath would come forward and challenge anyone of the Israelites to come forward and fight him but because of his size the Israelites were terrified to do so. This happened for forty straight days.
At this time, there was a young shepherd boy, David, who was God's servant. He had three older brothers in the army but he was way to young to be a soldier. But he was very courageous and because of his devout faith in God and his skill with his slingshot, he desired to go. He had his opportunity when his father wanted him to go to his soldier brothers to deliver some food. He had no armor, shield, helmet, or sword, but he was armed with God's protection. Before he left he picked up five smooth stones from the riverbed and carried his slingshot.
When he got to the battlefront, Goliath stepped out and again roared his challenge. Brave, small David took of one the stones, placed it in the slingshot and off it whirled and struck Goliath square in the middle of his forehead. The giant fell down with a thunderous thud dead! David cut off Goliath's head with the giant's own sword!
