SCRIPTURE

Matthew 5:13 New Testament

You are the salt of the earth.  But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

Salt was important in the ancient world because it kept food from spoiling and so was a preservative. Like food, society needs an antidote for its corruption.  The disciples, all those following Jesus, are to be this antidote.

This is a metaphor for life.  Salt brings dead things fresh like a new soul is inserted into a dead, sinful body  But it also brings flavor to things  Food without it can be insipid, bland, or even have a sickening taste.  Christianity/Jesus is to life, what salt is to food.  Salt never loses its flavor.

LESSON

Christians are to be salt. Not only in our lives but society as well.  Be that salt.
