SCRIPTURE

Daniel 5:13-23 Old Testament

Daniel, a prophet, was held captive in Babylon.  He was from Judah and the Babylonians took the Jews to far away Babylon when Judah was conquered.  He was there about 60 years surrounded by Idolaters.  During that time, because he could interpret the king's dreams, he became popular in King Darius court.  Daniel prayed every day to God.

The high officials in the court, convinced the king to outlaw prayer to God because they were jealous of him, so the king made a new law concerning that and the penalty in doing that, was death.  But no matter, Daniel continued to pray despite the new law.  The king was forced because of the new law to lock him in a den of hungry lions condemned to die. God intervened and saved him, shutting the lions's mouths.  He was unscathed, and the lions still hungry.  God took care of Daniel, and he prospered throughout his life despite being held captive.  And of course, he continued to pray to God every day!

LESSON

Daniel is an example of dedication and commitment in God despite being captive in a foreign, hostile land . He did not compromise and was persistent in  his unwavering faith.  Do likewise.
