I Samuel 3:1-9 Old Testament
Samuel became a prophet for Israel , but this story is about when he was a little boy. Samuel lived in the temple with the priest, Eli. Samuel dedicated his whole life to God and helping Eli. Eli became old and blind and this is what happened one night.
After everyone was in bed and asleep, Samuel was awaken by a voice calling for him. Thinking it was Eli, Samuel ran to his bedside and said, "Here I am!" Eli said that he didn't call him! Back to bed Samuel went. This voice happened three times. After the third time, Eli said, "When you hear the voice again, say, 'Speak, Lord. Your servant is listening.'" It was God's voice calling him!
Samuel obeyed, "Here I am, Lord, your servant is listening!
LESSON
We can hear God's voice, too, just like Samuel. How? Be receptive, attuned, quiet, and listen. Scripture is God's word. God is speaking to us through the Holy Spirit into our hearts and minds as we read the Bible and meditate on it. Listen for his voice.
