Mud in His Eyes

SCRIPTURE

John 9:1-9 New Testament

I chose this because I think it's an unusual story.

Jesus healed a man born blind by gathering up some dirt into his hands and spitting in it. Then He rubbed his hands together to make a paste.  He then rubbed it on the blind man's eyes. Next he told  him to go and wash his face in a pool. When the man did this, he was no longer blind. The religious leaders who observed this were angry at Jesus for doing this because it was the sabbath. The Jews could do no work on that day not even doing good, which this  certainly was.

LESSON

The story continues after verse 9 to say that when the former blind man was questioned by the religious leaders they declared it a magic trick!  The former blind man replied to the religious leaders, "I don't know how Jesus healed me, but all I know was I was once blind, but now I see."

This is part of a hymn we sing, Amazing Grace. I am calling it a metaphor for how Jesus transforms us, or changes the heart of people who are blind to Jesus and what He preached. But when Jesus comes into your life, touches you in your heart (No, he doesn't use mud!), you are transformed into a new person. Your dirt, bad ways, are washed away. AMAZING GRACE!

Afterthought: Grace is a hard concept which will be addressed later. To put simply, it's a precious gift God gives to us. It's not earned, but a love freely given to us, a gift because of His immense love. 💕
