SCRIPTURE

John 1:29 New Testament

The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the lamb God who takes away the sin of the world!"

I wrote the other day that I would address the term that Jesus was the Lamb of God. I will humbly try and do so today.

LESSON

First off, the John in the above text, was John the Baptist, Jesus' cousin who was born to prepare the way, get people ready, for the coming Messiah, Jesus. John said this when Jesus came into sight at Jordan River where John was baptizing people.

Before Jesus came to earth, the Jewish priests burned sacrifices to atone or forgive sins. At Passover, a yearly holy holiday commemorating the first Passover, the animal chosen was a  perfect lamb without any blemish. The blood from the lamb was applied to the doorposts to protect a dark angel from entering the home. This started when the Jews were captive in  Egypt. (Exodus 12:11-13)

Well when Jesus came to earth,  they no longer had to do this because he died on the cross as a sacrifice for their/our sins. He was unblemished, never sinned,  himself. And when he died it was Passover!! Jesus shed his blood for us thus no more lambs killed. He was and is the perfect lamb. 🐑
